Magic Soda Cake
Clorox recently introduced a new website, Recipes for Fun. This fun website is a place where you can find and share your recipes for family fun! Get ideas for cooking with your kids, science experiments to try, and fun arts & crafts. This website is all about getting back to basics with your kids–teaching them life skills while having fun! They’ve also got an exciting giveaway going on, which I’ll tell you more about later. For now, let’s get to the Magic Soda Cake.
If your family is like mine, about this time of winter is a trying time. The kids have been stuck indoors for weeks and are getting antsy. It’s nice to have something fun (and sweet!) to do to pass the time. This Magic Soda Cake is fun, easy and a great way to introduce your kids to baking. Here’s the recipe:
Magic Soda Cake
disposable 1/2 steamer tray (optional)
one box cake mix (your choice of flavor)
one can DIET soda (your choice of flavor)
pan spray
toppings such as chocolate syrup, fruit, marshmallows, or whipped cream (optional)
It’s especially important to make sure you preheat the oven to 350 degrees when making this recipe as it works fast. In a large bowl, pour in the cake mix, then add in the diet soda. Stir until all of the soda is mixed in. There will still be lumps, but that’s OK. Spray the pan with pan spray, then pour the cake mix into the pan. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
In the last 10 minutes, you can add any toppings you desire (except the whipped cream–wait until the cake cools before adding this). Let cool, slice and eat your “science experiment!”
This recipe is really customizable to your tastes and needs. Try combining different flavors of cake for different results. Some good combinations to think about: chocolate cake with cherry soda, lemon cake with orange soda, strawberry cake with raspberry soda, and angel food cake with lemon-lime soda. Just don’t forget that it needs to be a DIET soda for the cake to rise like it should.
Simple recipes like this one can be a great way to introduce kids to cooking. Start by having them make the decisions for what kind of cake mix and soda you should use. Allow them to pour in the cake mix and soda (with help for the younger ones). Stirring can be great fun with this recipe, too, since it will be bubbly! Adding their choice of toppings can make this a fun experience, too. With this customizable cake, you can let your child make their own “creation” to share with family and friends.
