The Key of Kilenya
I was asked to review the book, The Key of Kilenya. As it’s a fantasy book for young adults, I thought it would be a good chance to introduce my oldest son, Aaron, to this book and author. He loves the fantasy genre.
Plot Synopsis
Jacob and his family are attacked by wolves. He races away from the wolves into a forest, where he is transported from our world to another one. Once there, he finds the people of that world need him to recover an object of great power, the Key of Kilenya. He travels on this quest with the help of some friends and faces many challenges along the way.
About the Author
Andrea is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, boating, biking, and taking walks). She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are
basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.
Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.
My Take
The Key to Kilenya was an enjoyable and refreshing book. The story flowed smoothly and the dialogue was well-written. It was fast-paced, but a fun read with an interesting story. The vocabulary was at a good level for its intended audience of young adult readers and would be enjoyable to them. My son took a break from reading his current series (The Ranger’s Apprentice) to read some of The Key to Kilenya and he enjoyed it. My only criticism is that some of the older characters had a little too much knowledge and power, directing the younger group on the quest without involving themselves directly. This did not distract from the story too much, however, and I am looking forward to reading more of Jacob’s tale.
